Journalist Japhet Weeks has written an article about Shu Ren International School and the demand for Mandarin immersion education in the East Bay. From the article:
On a Friday afternoon in the Plum Garden classroom, Julian’s first grade teacher asked him to perform a simple task: bring a cardboard box full of paper scraps to the table. Instead, Julian grabbed a scrap of paper from the box. The teacher told him again that she wanted the box, but Julian still didn’t understand. So she took the box herself as she repeated the request, enunciating each word.
Julian’s “ah-hah!” moment consisted of a nod and a slightly embarrassed smile. He shuffled back to the table, picked up his scissors and began cutting again.
Julian, a student at the newly opened, private Shuren International School in Berkeley, had difficulty understanding his teacher, To Kai-yao, because she spoke to him in Mandarin. It was only his tenth day of class.
More American kids than ever are learning Mandarin, spurred on by the rapid ascension of China over the past three decades from a country mired in messy revolution to a global economic powerhouse.
…Shuren, which claims to be the only full-time Chinese-language immersion school in the East Bay– and hopes to one day offer a dual-immersion program – is counting on the appetite for Chinese-language education to keep growing.
…Anne-Marie Pierce, President of AMP & Associates, the educational consulting firm that helped launch Shuren, is optimistic about the school’s future. She says the school has a low enrollment now because Moore had difficulty finding a school site and got off to a late start. Shuren “has everything going for it,” she said. “The need and the demand for Chinese bilingual education is very high for good reasons — Chinese is one of the languages of the future.”
The article also features a very nice slideshow of the classrooms and students which includes an interview with Head of School Jie Moore talking about her vision for Shu Ren. Please read the full article here.

Dear Friends of Shu Ren:
Greetings! The renovation of Shu Ren is going very well and we expect to complete it at the end of this month. We are confident that we will be able to open our school in early September. Considering the fact that we just located this site in March, it will be an incredible accomplishment to be able to open within six months! The exact day may vary depending on the City inspection and Community Care Licensing.
I also want to let you all know that we have made some significant changes to the admissions process & our tuition/fees structure. The main motivation is to meet the diverse needs of parents and make the admission process more streamlined.
Finally, please save the date! We are planning to celebrate our Grand Opening on September 20, 2008. You are all invited to the celebration. On Grand Opening Day, you will have an opportunity to tour our beautiful campus, talk to school administrators and teachers, and meet other parents who share similar interests and a passion for Mandarin immersion education. It will be a wonderful occasion for all of us to get together.
We hope that Shu Ren International School will become a Center in the East Bay for Chinese immersion education and Chinese cultural activities. Our success also relies on your support and involvement. We are constantly seeking feedback from parents about how we may improve our school. If you have any suggestion about our program, ideas about possible new classes and so on, I would love to hear them.
Thank you,
Jie Moore

In recent weeks, Shu Ren International School has made rapid progress towards our goal of opening the school in September 2008. Below are a few of the main developments:
- The City of Berkeley has approved both our Use Permit and Building Permit for our new site at 1333 University Avenue in Central Berkeley. Construction is now well underway. See the post below for details about the site design.
- We have submitted our application for a Community Child Care License.
- On June 11 and June 14, Shu Ren held open houses at our new site, and they were a great success. About 40 families toured the site, met Shu Ren teachers and administrators, and learned more about the IBO curriculum.
We are now confident that Shu Ren will be able to open in September, and we encourage parents to follow our progress through this blog. If you have any questions regarding our programs, please email Jie Moore at jie.moore@shureninternationalschool.com.

We are very pleased that Twig Gallemore, a Shu Ren parent and an architect with Elevation Design + Architecture, is designing the new Shu Ren site. Attached as PDF files are the latest versions of his architectural plans, including a Floor
Plan, a Furniture Plan, and an Exterior Plan.
The plan incorporates several traditional Chinese design elements including the planting of bamboo. The three classrooms will be named in honor of the “three friends of winter” (岁寒三友) from traditional Chinese culture, which uses three different kinds of trees represent various ideals of the human character, including integrity and perseverance. The two preschool classrooms will be called Plum Garden (梅园) and Bamboo Garden (竹园), while the Kindergarten classroom will be Pine Garden (松园). The multi-purpose room will be Peach Garden (桃园), which alludes to a Chinese idiom about the fruitfulness of education.
The reception area will be a Hall of Peace, where flags of the home countries of all Shu Ren families and staff will be hung in a sign of international solidarity and multicultural understanding.
We are very excited to watch Twig’s beautiful design come to life over the next couple of months.
